More than 50 people have died in Taiwan in the country’s worst rail disaster in more than 40 years. The train, which was carrying about 490 people, has come off the rails in a tunnel after being hit by a truck. It is believed the train was derailed after a construction vehicle parked on a slope above the railway line slipped down from the worksite and hit it.
Some survivors managed to walk out of the tunnel along the top of the train, others had to be carried out, and dozens received treatment at nearby hospitals.
The crumbled carriages inside the tunnel made it difficult for rescuers to reach those who were still trapped.
