California verifies enough Gavin Newsom recall signatures to trigger election

California’s secretary of state has announced the petition to recall state Governor Gavin Newsom has reached the threshold of verified signatures necessary to trigger an election.

The recall petition gathered a whopping 1,626,042 valid signatures – 130,333 more than the 1,495,709 required.

“This now triggers the next phase of the recall process, a 30-business-day period in which voters may submit written requests to county Registrars of Voters to remove their names from the recall petition,” Secretary of State Shirley Weber said in a media release.

“A recall election will be held unless a sufficient number of signatures are withdrawn.”
