According to Asia correspondent Adrian Brown, the statement made by Hong Kong Police Commissioner Chris Tang warning against fake news “comes at a time of increasing censorship”.
“Last week, the Commissioner of the Hong Kong Police, Chris Tang, warned journalists that if they did what he called fake news if they made reports that contained fake news of broadcast or were published, then they would be punished,” he told Sky News.
Mr. Brown said Hong Kong did not currently have a law against fake news and said there were fears about who would control the definition of fake news.
“It has to lead to growing speculation that perhaps a fake news law is going to be on the statute book very soon, but the problem is who defines what fake news really is.”
