Johnson intervening in proposed new ‘super league’
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expressed his concerns about a proposed breakaway European super league – which, if given the green light, could see significant clubs immediately withdrawn from the competition.
Twelve of Europe’s biggest football clubs have proposed a breakaway super league that will remove the threat of relegation for founding members and sees more money flow to the top echelons; however, they insist it will flow down. Addressing the proposal, Mr. Johnson said, “we’re going to look at everything we can do with the football authorities to make sure this doesn’t go ahead in the way it’s currently being proposed”.
“I don’t think that it is good news for fans; I don’t think it’s good news for football in this country.”
