Naomi Osaka withdraws from French Open following media boycott

Four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the French Open due to mental heath issues in the wake of her media boycott.

The world number two was fined $15,000 for not attending post-match media duties following her match on Sunday.

In a statement Ms Osaka said she had struggled to cope with long bouts of depression since the US Open in 2018.

She also said she was not a natural public speaker and has “huge waves of anxiety” before speaking to “the world’s media”.

Tennis icon Billie Jean King joined the chorus of players criticising Ms Osaka and said it was part of her job to speak to the media.

The 23-year-old said pulling out was the best thing for the tournament and other layers so everyone could go back to focusing on the tennis in Paris.
