PM hopeful submarine project is back on track

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has indicated he is hopeful Australia’s $90 billion submarine project is back on track after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Australia first commissioned the new Attack-class fleet in 2016 amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific, but it has since been plagued by cost blowouts, schedule slippages and disagreements around the French contractor’s other commitments.

The company – Naval Group – has until September to revise its designs after earlier plans were too expensive.

In what was Scott Morrison’s final engagement in Europe before returning home – he praised his French counterpart for his candidness in the submarine stoush.
