A politician in a state where the Delta variant of Covid-19 is again spreading made an unusual claim on social media that was quickly deleted.
Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert from the US state of Colorado tweeted on Thursday: “The easiest way to make the Delta variant go away is to turn off CNN. And vote Republican.”
She quickly deleted the tweet after it received backlash.
The Delta strain of Covid-19 has devastated communities around the world, including India where millions were infected and it is estimated four million people died.
The strain has since spread to dozens of countries including China, Australia and the US — and it has not spared Boebert’s state of Colorado, where as many as 50 per cent of new cases are infected with the Delta variant.
Colorado Democrat Steven Woodrow responded to Boebert’s tweet by saying it “proves once again that stupidity has a champion in Colorado”.
Respondents noted that people in Colorado were suffering from the Delta variant of covid while she was questioning its very existence.
“Boebert’s district has a surge of the Delta variant of covid, unvaccinated people are getting very sick and dying and she tweets this sh*t,” one woman wrote.
“Unbelievably ignorant and irresponsible.”
Boebert has positioned herself as anti-immigration and pro-guns and has become hugely divisive with professionally-edited videos she posts on social media.
Last month she visited the border wall and brought along a cardboard cutout of Vice President Kamala Harris “so she can see exactly what this regime is responsible for with its man-made crisis”.
The Washington Post published an article last week titled:.
In it, author Dana Milbank wrote: “The QAnon-admiring first-term Republican congresswoman from Colorado has tried everything to get noticed. Since she burst on the scene by tweeting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s whereabouts during the Jan. 6 insurrection, she has attempted one stunt after another.
“But she has languished as a poor man’s Sarah Palin and a third-rate Josh Hawley, as others seize the spotlight with superior antics.
“In the past couple of weeks alone, she falsely claimed that liberals ‘legalised knowingly spreading HIV’, asserted that her election ‘is certainly a sign and a wonder, just like God promised’, attacked a trans woman weightlifter with the message ‘Welcome to the Woke Olympics’ and declared that ‘Critical Race Theory is now mainstream’.”
Politico last month wrote that Boebert, 34, “has become known as one of Donald Trump’s most outspoken acolytes in Congress”.
In May, Boebert published on Instagram a number of posts critical of measures to keep Americans safe during the pandemic.
On masks, she wrote that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can “kiss my mask” and on the proposal of vaccine passports she wrote “My passport says I’m an American citizen and that is the only passport I need”.
“I only need one passport, and it ain’t coming from (Dr Anthony) Fauci,” she wrote.
