Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has won a fourth term in office after claiming 95 percent of the vote in an election. Western observer’s claim was marked by fraud. The win gives Assad seven more years in power and extends his family’s rule to nearly six decades. Syria has been engulfed in a 10-year civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians and displaced more than 11 million people. The war and international sanctions have crippled the nation’s economy and exacerbated the COVID crisis.
