Tokyo Olympics to be the first to go ahead with no crowds

The Tokyo Olympic Games will be held without spectators in the Japanese capital in a first for the international games.

The decision to ban crowds just two weeks out from the beginning of the games is due to a rise in cases of the highly contagious delta variant.

Organisers agreed fans are not allowed to attend at a meeting on Thursday evening after the Japanese prime minister declared Tokyo’s fourth state of emergency.

Previously up to 10,0000 local fans could have been allowed into venues.
