The British government is telling people to keep using the NHS test and trace app as it works to minimise the numbers forced into isolation.
Opposition Leader Sir Keir Starmer says he is “really concerned” about plans to alter the app to make it less sensitive to potential contact with someone with COVID-19.
The app has been downloaded more than 26 million times and 350,000 users were alerted of a close contact last week – but more people are choosing not to use it.
“I’m really concerned about what I’m hearing about changes to the track and trace app, this feels like taking the batteries out of a smoke detector and that is never a good idea,” Sir Starmer said.
If confidence in the app is lost, it becomes less effective and changes may be enough to convince people it is still important to stop the spread of the virus.
