Young Utah sisters steal their parents’ car, crash into semi-trailer 16km later

A nine-year-old girl and her four-year-old sister have made headlines after stealing their parents’ car in the US and crashing 16 kilometres later.

A nine-year-old Utah girl and her little sister stole their parents’ car on Wednesday morning with the goal of making it to California before crashing into a semi-trailer 10 miles (16km) away, police said.

The youngsters, who were not injured in the freeway smash-up in West Valley City, told responding officers they took the car because they wanted to “swim in the ocean”, authorities said.

With the nine-year-old driving and her four-year-old sibling in the passenger seat, the duo travelled on a highway and freeway before crossing a median strip and slamming head-on into the trailer, West Valley City police said on Twitter.

Police said the car was badly damaged and the semi had to be towed.

The sisters were wearing seatbelts, police said, which they believe spared them any injuries.
